Mock 2

題目常會問 “How does the speaker feel?” 或 “What is the speaker’s attitude?”,這時候語氣就是你解題的關鍵線索。

文章 B: Personal Essay

Why I Decided to Take a Gap Year

By Kevin Huang

When I told my parents I wanted to take a gap year before starting university, they were not exactly thrilled. “You will fall behind,” my father warned. “You might never go back to school,” my mother added. I understood their concerns, but I had a feeling that this was what I needed.

During my gap year, I did three things: I worked part-time at a bookstore, volunteered at a local animal shelter, and traveled alone to Australia for two months on a working holiday visa. None of these experiences were particularly glamorous. The bookstore job paid minimum wage. The animal shelter involved a lot of cleaning. And in Australia, I spent three weeks picking fruit under the hot sun.

But here is what I gained: I learned how to manage my own finances because for the first time in my life, I was responsible for all my expenses. At the shelter, I discovered that doing something meaningful matters more to me than doing something that looks good on a resume. And during my solo travels, I faced countless small challenges — getting lost, missing buses, struggling to communicate — and each one made me more confident and resourceful.

When I finally started university a year later, I was more focused and motivated than I had ever been in high school. I knew why I was there and what I wanted to get out of the experience. To anyone considering a gap year, I would say this: it is not for everyone, and it requires planning and discipline. But if you approach it with the right mindset, it can be one of the most educational years of your life.

19. What was Kevin’s parents’ initial reaction to his gap year plan?

  • (A) They were fully supportive and encouraged him to travel widely.
  • (B) They were worried he might fall behind or never return to school.
  • (C) They suggested he take two gap years instead of just one.
  • (D) They refused to speak to him about the topic entirely.

20. According to the essay, what did Kevin learn from his part-time bookstore job?

  • (A) That retail work is much easier than he had expected.
  • (B) How to manage his finances since he was responsible for all his expenses.
  • (C) How to read and recommend books to various types of customers.
  • (D) That he wanted to open his own bookstore in the future.

21. What word best describes Kevin’s attitude when he started university after the gap year?

  • (A) Confused and uncertain about his direction in life.
  • (B) Regretful that he had wasted a year before starting school.
  • (C) More focused and motivated than he had been in high school.
  • (D) Exhausted and burned out from his gap year experiences.

C: Science Article

Can Houseplants Really Clean Indoor Air?

You have probably seen articles claiming that certain houseplants can remove toxins from indoor air. The idea became popular after a famous 1989 NASA study found that plants could remove certain chemicals from sealed chambers. This led to decades of marketing claims that a few potted plants could significantly improve the air quality in your home or office.

However, more recent research has cast doubt on these claims. A comprehensive 2019 study published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology reviewed decades of research and reached a different conclusion. While plants do absorb some pollutants, the rate at which they do so in real-world settings is far too slow to make a meaningful difference.

To put this in perspective, the researchers calculated that you would need between 10 and 1,000 plants per square meter of floor space to achieve the same air-cleaning effect as simply opening a window or using a standard ventilation system. In other words, a typical living room would require hundreds, if not thousands, of plants to produce a noticeable effect.

This does not mean houseplants are useless, of course. Studies have consistently shown that having plants in indoor spaces can reduce stress, improve mood, and increase productivity. They just should not be relied upon as air purifiers. If you are concerned about indoor air quality, experts recommend more effective solutions: open windows regularly, use an air purifier with a HEPA filter, vacuum carpets frequently, and avoid indoor smoking and burning candles.

22. What is the main idea of this article?

  • (A) Houseplants are completely useless and people should not keep them at home.
  • (B) The NASA study was fraudulent and should be ignored entirely.
  • (C) While houseplants have psychological benefits, their ability to clean indoor air is very limited in real settings.
  • (D) Opening windows is the only scientifically proven way to improve indoor air quality.

23. According to the article, how many plants per square meter would be needed to match a ventilation system’s air-cleaning power?

  • (A) 1 to 10 plants
  • (B) 10 to 1,000 plants
  • (C) 100 to 500 plants
  • (D) 1,000 to 10,000 plants

24. What benefits of houseplants does the article acknowledge as scientifically supported?

  • (A) They can cure common illnesses like colds and headaches.
  • (B) They reduce stress, improve mood, and increase productivity.
  • (C) They can replace air purifiers in most household settings.
  • (D) They remove all harmful chemicals from indoor air within hours.

D: Customer Complaint Letter

Dear Customer Service Manager,

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the delivery service I received from your company on April 28, 2026.

I ordered a desk and office chair from your website on April 15, with a promised delivery window of 3–5 business days. Not only did the delivery arrive 10 business days late on April 28, but when the packages finally arrived, both items were damaged. The desk had a large scratch across the surface, and one leg of the office chair was bent, making it completely unusable.

I immediately contacted your customer service hotline and was told that a replacement would be arranged within 48 hours. That was five days ago, and I have not received any further communication. I have sent two follow-up emails, neither of which has received a response.

At this point, I am requesting a full refund for both items (order number: TK-88241) and that you arrange for the damaged products to be picked up from my address at no additional cost to me. If I do not receive a satisfactory response within seven business days, I will have no choice but to file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Association.

I look forward to your prompt response and a swift resolution.

Sincerely, Chen Yi-ting

文章 E: Interview Transcript (Excerpt)

Interviewer: Dr. Lee, thank you for joining us today. Your new book argues that failure is actually more valuable than success when it comes to learning. Can you explain what you mean by that?

Dr. Lee: Absolutely. The core idea is that when you succeed at something, your brain has no reason to change. You think, “Whatever I did clearly worked,” and you repeat the same approach next time. But when you fail — when you get a question wrong, when a project doesn’t go as planned, when you experience a setback — your brain is forced to reconsider. It asks, “What went wrong? What should I do differently?” This process of analysis and adjustment is where deep learning actually happens.

Interviewer: So you are saying that success can actually prevent growth?

Dr. Lee: In a way, yes. Success feels good, and I am not saying people should avoid it. But success does not teach you very much. If a student gets 95% on a test, they tend to ignore the 5% they got wrong. But if they get 65%, they are forced to go back and figure out what they did not understand. The learning is much more active and focused.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to teachers and parents based on this research?

Dr. Lee: Stop treating mistakes as something to be embarrassed about. When a child makes an error, instead of just providing the correct answer, ask them: “Why do you think this is wrong? What could you try instead?” Turn failure into an investigation. When students learn to analyze their own errors, they develop skills that transfer to every subject and every area of life.

28. According to Dr. Lee, why can success be less valuable for learning than failure?

  • (A) Success makes people arrogant and unwilling to listen to advice.
  • (B) Success prevents the brain from reconsidering and adjusting its approach.
  • (C) Success requires too much effort and leads to burnout quickly.
  • (D) Success is rare, so it cannot be used as a reliable teaching tool.

29. What does Dr. Lee recommend teachers and parents do when a child makes a mistake?

  • (A) Immediately point out the correct answer to save the child time.
  • (B) Ignore the mistake to avoid embarrassing the child in front of others.
  • (C) Ask the child why they think it is wrong and what they could try instead.
  • (D) Give the child a lower grade as motivation to study harder next time.

30. What does Dr. Lee say about students who score 95% versus 65% on a test?

  • (A) The 95% student learned more because they made fewer errors.
  • (B) The 65% student is forced to engage in more active and focused learning.
  • (C) Both students learn equally regardless of their test scores.
  • (D) Test scores have no relationship to learning outcomes whatsoever.

(Furthermore, In addition, On the contrary),讓整篇文章「流動」起來。

  • 詞彙提示: be known for (phr.)
This city is known worldwide for its friendly residents and rich historical culture.

Research shows that regular exercise can not only improve physical health but also reduce stress.

一旦 / develop a habit (phr.)
Once you develop the habit of reading every day, you will find that the world becomes much broader.

鼓勵 / give up (phr.)
If it had not been for my teacher’s encouragement, I might have given up on English a long time ago.

Part 2:

The Pros and Cons of Technology in Our Daily Lives(科技在日常生活中的利弊)

Technology has become an inseparable part of my daily life. From the moment I wake up and check my phone for messages to the time I fall asleep listening to a podcast, I am constantly interacting with digital devices. I use my laptop for schoolwork, my phone for staying in touch with friends, and streaming services for entertainment.

The benefits of technology are undeniable. It gives us instant access to an endless amount of information — if I want to learn about ancient history or fix a broken bicycle, I can find a tutorial in seconds. It also allows us to stay connected with loved ones across the globe through video calls and social media. However, technology also has significant downsides. Constant notifications make it difficult to focus on one task for an extended period. Furthermore, many people, myself included, find themselves scrolling mindlessly through social media for hours, wasting time that could have been spent on more meaningful activities. There are also growing concerns about how companies collect and use our personal data.

To maintain a healthy relationship with technology, I believe we must set clear boundaries. One practical suggestion is to designate “tech-free” periods each day — for example, no phones during meals and no screens for one hour before bed. Technology is a tool, and like any tool, its value depends entirely on how wisely we use it.

用 “Actually,” “The thing is…” “What I find interesting is…”

The Old Tree House

Behind my grandmother’s house, there stands an enormous banyan tree that has been growing for over a century. Its thick roots hang down from the branches like curtains, creating a natural shelter underneath. As a child, I called this space my “tree house,” even though there were no walls or roof — just the living canopy of leaves above me.

I spent countless afternoons there, reading comic books, building tiny forts out of twigs, and imagining I was an explorer in a distant jungle. My grandmother would bring me slices of chilled watermelon, and we would sit together in the cool shade, listening to the birds singing in the branches above.

When I visited last summer, the tree was still there, as magnificent as ever. But I noticed something I had never seen as a child — initials carved into the bark, left by my father and his siblings decades before I was born. The tree had sheltered three generations of my family, and in that moment, I understood that some things in life are far more precious than anything money can buy.

  • banyan /ˈbænjən/
  • canopy /ˈkænəpi/
  • twigs /twɪɡz/
  • magnificent /mæɡˈnɪfɪsənt/
  • siblings /ˈsɪblɪŋz/
  • precious /ˈpreʃəs/

Part 2:

1. What is your favorite meal of the day, and what do you usually eat?

My favorite meal is breakfast. I love starting the day with something warm and comforting. I usually eat a bowl of hot oatmeal with sliced bananas and a spoonful of honey. On weekends, when I have more time, I might make scrambled eggs with toast and a cup of fresh coffee. A good breakfast really sets the tone for the entire day.

2. Describe a movie or TV show that you have recently watched and enjoyed.

I recently watched a documentary about ocean conservation called “Blue Planet II.” It was absolutely breathtaking. The underwater footage was so vivid and detailed that I felt like I was actually diving in the ocean. The documentary also opened my eyes to how much plastic pollution is damaging marine life. It was both beautiful and thought-provoking — the best kind of film.

3. What do you think are the qualities of a good friend?

I think a good friend needs three key qualities: honesty, reliability, and empathy. A true friend tells you the truth even when it is difficult to hear. They are someone you can count on — if they say they will be there, they show up. Most importantly, a good friend tries to understand how you feel and supports you without judgment. These are the friends worth keeping for a lifetime.

4. If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go and why?

If I could visit any country, I would choose New Zealand. I have seen so many stunning photographs of its landscapes — from snow-capped mountains to green rolling hills to beautiful beaches. I would love to go hiking there and experience the incredible natural scenery firsthand. I have also heard that the people are very friendly and welcoming, which makes it even more appealing.

5. Do you think students today are under too much pressure? Explain your view.

Yes, I definitely think students today face excessive pressure. The competition for top universities and good jobs has become incredibly intense. Many students attend cram schools after regular classes and study late into the night, leaving little time for hobbies, exercise, or simply relaxing. I think the education system places too much emphasis on test scores and not enough on mental health and personal development. We need to find a healthier balance.

6. How do you stay healthy and fit?

I try to stay healthy through a combination of regular exercise and mindful eating. I go jogging three times a week, usually in the early evening when the temperature is cooler. I also make an effort to eat more vegetables and less processed food. Recently, I have started practicing yoga on weekends to improve my flexibility and reduce stress. It is a work in progress, but I feel the difference.

7. What kind of volunteer work would you be interested in doing?

I would be very interested in volunteering at a local animal shelter. I have always loved animals, and the idea of helping abandoned dogs and cats find new homes is really meaningful to me. I imagine the work would be physically tiring — cleaning cages, walking dogs, preparing food — but getting to see an animal go to a loving family would make it all worthwhile.

8. In your opinion, what is the biggest environmental problem facing the world today?

In my opinion, climate change is the most serious environmental threat we face. Rising temperatures are causing more extreme weather events, melting polar ice caps, and threatening countless species with extinction. What worries me most is that the effects are already visible — stronger typhoons, longer droughts, and devastating wildfires. Addressing climate change requires global cooperation, and I hope more countries will take serious action before it is too late.

9. Do you prefer to work on projects alone or in a group?

I generally prefer working in a group. I find that discussing ideas with others often leads to solutions I would never have thought of on my own. Different people bring different strengths, and when those are combined effectively, the result is usually better than what any individual could produce alone. That said, I do appreciate having some alone time to process my thoughts before sharing them with the team.

10. What is one piece of technology you could not live without?

I think I would have a very hard time living without my smartphone. It is not just a device for calling and texting — it is my alarm clock, my calendar, my camera, my music player, and my connection to the internet all in one. It helps me stay organized, navigate unfamiliar places, and keep in touch with people I care about. I know I am probably too dependent on it, but it has genuinely made my life more convenient in countless ways.

Part 3:

1. Describe the scene in the picture in your own words.

The picture captures an ordinary yet fascinating scene inside a busy MRT carriage. Near the door, a student is standing and studying vocabulary flashcards, making use of the travel time to prepare for an exam. In one of the seats, a tired office worker has fallen asleep with his head resting against the window — there is even a small smile on his face, as if he is having a pleasant dream. In the middle of the carriage, a mother is quietly reading a storybook to her young child sitting on her lap. In the corner, two foreign tourists are looking at a digital map with confused expressions, probably trying to figure out which stop to get off at. Outside the window, city lights streak by, creating a warm, almost cinematic atmosphere.

2. What does this picture tell us about how people use their time on public transportation?

This picture shows that people use their time on public transportation in very different ways. The student is being productive — turning “dead time” into study time. The office worker is recovering from exhaustion by catching up on sleep. The mother is using the ride as quality bonding time with her child. The tourists are navigating an unfamiliar city. What I find interesting is that a simple MRT ride reveals so much about people’s priorities and circumstances. It reminds me that time is never truly “wasted” if we are doing something meaningful — whether that something is studying, resting, or connecting with loved ones.

3. How could public transportation systems be improved to better serve different types of passengers?

Public transportation systems could be improved in several ways to serve diverse passengers better. For students and workers, stronger Wi-Fi and more charging ports would allow them to study or work productively during their commute. For parents with children, designated family-friendly carriages with wider doors and spaces for strollers would be extremely helpful. For tourists, clearer multilingual signage and audio announcements, as well as interactive route-planning kiosks at stations, would reduce confusion. For elderly passengers and people with limited mobility, more priority seating and smoother accessibility between platforms and street levels would be essential. The key is to design systems not just for the “average” passenger but for the full diversity of people who rely on them every day.
