Part 3: 閱讀理解(Reading Comprehension)

Passage 1: The Future of Work

The nature of work is undergoing a profound transformation. Automation, artificial intelligence, and remote technologies are reshaping not just how we work, but what work itself means. While previous waves of technological change primarily affected manual labor, the current revolution is targeting cognitive tasks—jobs that were once considered uniquely human.

Studies suggest that within the next two decades, up to 40% of current jobs may be significantly altered by automation. However, this does not necessarily mean massive unemployment. History shows that technological revolutions tend to create new types of work even as they eliminate old ones. The key question is whether the workforce can adapt quickly enough to fill these new roles, which often require different skills than those being displaced.

Education systems must evolve to meet these challenges. Traditional models that emphasize rote learning and standardized testing are increasingly out of step with what the future workforce will need. Skills such as critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to collaborate with both humans and machines will become increasingly valuable. Lifelong learning will no longer be optional but essential, as workers will need to continuously update their skills throughout their careers.

The transition will not be painless. Workers in industries facing automation may experience significant disruption, and some may find it difficult to retrain for new careers. Governments and businesses must work together to provide support, including retraining programs, social safety nets, and policies that promote inclusive economic growth.

  1. According to the passage, the current technological revolution differs from previous ones in that it: (A) Primarily affects manual labor (B) Targets cognitive tasks (C) Has no impact on jobs (D) Creates only new jobs

  2. The passage suggests that automation will lead to: (A) Massive unemployment (B) The end of human work (C) Significant changes to existing jobs and creation of new ones (D) Decreased demand for skills

  3. According to the passage, the skills that will be most valuable in the future include: (A) Rote memorization (B) Standardized testing (C) Critical thinking and creativity (D) Manual labor

  4. The author’s main argument is that: (A) Automation will eliminate all jobs (B) Education systems are perfect as they are (C) Society must adapt to the changing nature of work (D) Technology should be banned

  5. The author’s tone in this passage is: (A) Alarmist (B) Indifferent (C) Cautiously optimistic (D) Pessimistic

Passage 2: Sustainable Cities

Urban areas face unprecedented environmental challenges. With more than half of the world’s population now living in cities, urban centers are responsible for approximately 70% of global carbon emissions despite occupying only about 2% of the Earth’s land surface. This concentration of population and economic activity makes cities both a major source of environmental problems and the key to potential solutions.

The concept of “sustainable cities” has emerged as a framework for addressing these challenges. Sustainable cities aim to reduce environmental impact while improving quality of life for residents. This involves multiple interconnected strategies: efficient public transportation systems that reduce reliance on private cars, energy-efficient buildings that lower carbon emissions, green spaces that improve air quality and provide ecosystem services, and circular economy principles that minimize waste.

Several cities have made significant progress toward sustainability. Copenhagen, for instance, has invested heavily in cycling infrastructure, with more than 60% of residents commuting by bicycle. Singapore has integrated green spaces into its urban fabric through innovative architecture and policies that mandate vegetation in new developments. Amsterdam is leading the way in circular economy practices, with policies aimed at making the city fully circular by 2050.

However, transitioning to sustainable cities is not without challenges. The costs of infrastructure improvements can be substantial, and changes often require shifts in behavior that residents may resist. Furthermore, sustainability efforts must be balanced with concerns about social equity—ensuring that environmental improvements benefit all residents, not just affluent ones.

  1. According to the passage, urban areas: (A) Have minimal environmental impact (B) Are responsible for most of the world’s carbon emissions (C) Are isolated from environmental problems (D) Have abundant green spaces

  2. The concept of sustainable cities involves: (A) Eliminating all human activity (B) Multiple strategies to reduce environmental impact (C) Returning to rural living (D) Banning private cars

  3. According to the passage, Copenhagen is notable for: (A) Its skyscrapers (B) Its cycling infrastructure (C) Its industrial production (D) Its population density

  4. The passage suggests that the main challenge to sustainable cities is: (A) Lack of technology (B) Costs and behavioral change requirements (C) Population decline (D) Lack of awareness

  5. According to the passage, sustainability efforts must be balanced with: (A) Economic growth at all costs (B) Social equity concerns (C) Population reduction (D) Industrial development
